BLACK LACETM SAMBUCUS, OR ELDERBERRY is a dazzling new deer resistant hardy Elderberry that is taking gardens by storm! One of our favorite plants at Stargazer Perennials Farm because it works in so may different garden and landscape situations. This extremely versatile deciduous shrub boasts intense lacy black foliage reminiscent of laceleaf Japanese maples but is a lot hardier and comes without the expensive price tag! As fall approaches, Black LaceTM Sambucus produces attractive burgundy-wine colored berries in clusters. Use these tart berries to make Elderberry wine, jams, jellies, or leave the dark wine-colored berries on the shrub to provide winter birds with a tasty snack. For the first two or three years in your garden you should forgo the fruit and prune Black LaceTM Sambucus back hard after blooming to promote a dense, shapely form.

Black LaceTM Sambucus Garden Uses and Care:
Black LaceTM Sambucus is useful for maintaining at a smaller size as a patio tree or large container centerpiece, mass plantings, as a specimen in a garden or perennial borders or when incorporated into a woodland setting. Black LaceTM Sambucus is particularly useful for replacing laceleaf Japanese maples in a garden design when the hardiness of the maples is an issue. This lacy black leafed Elderberry is generally trouble-free from pests or diseases, making it easy to decide to add it to gardens large or small. Black LaceTM Sambucus is very adaptable to soil and water situations, although it prefers evenly moist, rich garden soil. Once established, Elderberry shrubs are quite drought tolerant, but will also tolerate occasionally very wet soil conditions. This colorful and dramatic shrub can be grown several ways depending upon what you want to accomplish in your garden. If you have ample space to let Black LaceTM Sambucus grow, you can simply shear it hard the first few years to promote branching and a pleasing dense form, and then just let it go! In the perennial garden you can prune it back hard just after it finishes blooming to produce a smaller plant that is more appropriate for smaller gardens, or for containers. You can easily train Black LaceTM Sambucus into a small patio tree by removing the lower branches and leaves and selecting one or three dominant and artistic stems.
