How to Grow Acaena 'Purpurea':
An easy to grow ground cover, just follow these simple tips to ensure success with Purple New Zealand Bur in your garden:
Purchase well rooted plants in 3.5 inch pots or larger.
Plant Acaena in well-drained soil in full sun. If needed, amend soil with organic matter and Green Sand before planting.
Since Acaena grows by sprouting small, fiber-like rhizomatous roots, this plant thrives in soil that has good tilth.
A rock garden plant, this hardy perennial does not like to sit in water, therefore planting on on a slight incline or on a slope area if possible. Too much water can result in powdery mildew forming.
To plant as a lawn substitute, place plants 8 inches on center in a diamond pattern.
Let plants dry out in between watering.
Fertilize in the spring and summer with a liquid kelp fertilizer such as Maxicrop.
Other low growing flowering perennial plants to pair with Acaena Purple New Zealand Bur include other Aubrieta Axcent varieties, Delosperma, and Dianthus.
