Martha Roderick Lavender is prized by gardeners and herbalists for its very high oil content and compact flower bracts. How to Grow Martha Roderick

Lavender plants are easy to grow and can be grown in patio containers, in the perennial garden, planted along walkways or planted en masse on slope or terraces. Here a few tips to successfully growing Martha Roderick lavender in the garden:

  1. Select a full sun location with very well drained soil, which is on the porous side. If needed amend you soil first with Green Sand, playground sand or fine pea gravel.
  2. Dig a planting hole only slightly larger than the size of the plant container.
  3. Place the lavender in the hole and backfill with topsoil, water thoroughly.
  4. Do not over fertilize! A once a season, balanced slow release organic fertilizer is all they need.
  5. Water only as needed. Most lavender have difficulty in the garden due to over watering. Check the soil and allow to dry out in between watering.
  6. Trim only the spent flowers do not cut the shrub back to the ground in fall or spring as you do standard perennials.
Cold gardening zone care: In colder zones, plant lavender where large snow drifts will not crush the plants. In the spring, once the last hard freeze has passes, trim back the lavender, removing any damaged or dead stems. Once the ground temperature rises, new growth will sprout.
