Hydrangea 'Limelight' is the best performing hardy Hydrangea of the last few years. Limelight is a large Hydrangea that can easily be pruned smaller or trained into a small tree form. Limelight blooms on new wood so it benefits from a hard pruning in the spring, which will make it bloom even more profusely in late July. The light chartreuse blooms are dependable every year regardless of severity of winter or spring frosts and are not affected by soil pH. As cooler weather approaches in the fall the 6-12" lime green blooms turn to shades of dark pink, making for a striking ever-changing fall accent in the garden.
Hydrangea 'Limelight' Garden Uses and Care:
Limelight is a fantastic hardy shrub for mass plantings, for a magnificent hedge, as a specimen in garden or perennial borders or when incorporated into a woodland setting. Hardy Hydrangeas are usually not troubled by pests or diseases, making it a joy to add to any garden. Unlike other species of Hydrangea, Limelight will bloom reliably every year regardless of winter severity or late spring frosts. Limelight benefits from hard pruning in the spring and will flower even more profusely after pruning. Grows as large as 6' x 8', but is easily maintained at smaller sizes and is particularly suited for training into a small tree form perfect for a mixed shrub and perennials garden. Prefers loamy, well-drained soil but is extremely tolerant of soil types, and is quite tolerant of urban and street conditions. Can be drought tolerant once established, and requires less moisture than the macrophyllas, or large-leaf Hydrangeas.
The blooms of Limelight
are extremely attractive both in the landscape and as a long-lasting cut flower. Hydrangea 'Limelight' is a good choice for both fresh and dried flower arrangements. Winner of the 2007 Fresh Cut Flower of the Year Award from the Association of Specialty Cut Flower Growers!
