A non-invasive clumping bamboo, propagation of Green Panda has become rapid, as it is proving to be one of the most valuable introductions due to its compact, tidy habit and quick growth to maturity. Its origins are in the cold and high altitude forests (3,280 - 8,200 ft.) of Gansu, Sichuan, and stretch further north than most bamboos where the average temperature is 46 degrees.

New culm sheaths are lightly tinged terra cotta colored. This coloration is more vivid in higher alkaline soils than those grown in neutral or acidic soil. A fast growing bamboo, Fargesia Rufa regenerates quickly after heavy shearing, making it a preferred choice for the giant panda. This exciting new bamboo selection makes an attractive evergreen specimen or when grouped creates a magnificent hedge. New shoots appear early in spring and quickly develop into a large clump approximately 8 feet in diameter at maturity. Shop for Green Panda Bamboo.

How to Grow Fargesia Rufa Green Panda Bamboo

Here a few tips to successfully growing Green Panda Bamboo in the garden:
  1. Select a site that is high in organic matter, slightly acidic and has well-drained soil. If planting in full sun provide shade from later afternoon sun, and regardless of sun exposure provide shelter from high winds, which can desiccate bamboo.
  2. Bamboos prefer a soil high in organic matter, so allow their leaves to remain on the ground around the stems to prevent the growth of weeds and to enrich the soil.
  3. In cold winter areas (Zone 5), apply a 2-4 inch layer of leaves, compost, or bark chips in late fall to provide insulation during the winter.
  4. Consistent irrigation is necessary to get bamboo established and thriving.
  5. Use in a variety of ways and at any place in the garden, as solitary specimen, as hedges or as a screen.
Pair Green Panda Bamboo with other hardy bamboo plants, shade loving shrubs, or shade perennial plants.
