Planting and Caring for Rock Star Iris:
Rock Star is a hardy perennial garden plant that is also deer resistant. A fragrant iris, Rock Star performs best when planted in well-drained soil that is located in a full sun exposure. To discourage bulb rot, plant bearded irises with the fleshy shoulder of the main rhizomes exposed to the air, and above the soil. When first planting Rock Star Iris, add a slow-release organic fertilizer that is very low in nitrogen to the soil. Once established, German Iris are heavy feeders and benefit from fertilization with a balanced organic fertilizer after the first bloom, once again mid summer, and then again just as the blooms begin to set in the fall.
Winter Care:
As a hardy perennial garden plant, Rock Star Iris requires little winter protection. In the late fall trim back foliage to 2 inches above the soil level to deter pests from nesting during the winter. Top mulch the crowns of the iris plants with compost, or leaf mold to provide insulation during the winter. In the spring as new growth being to emerge, apply low nitrogen, organic fertilizer.
