Clematis are delightful, showy flowering vines that are ideal for growing on a trellis or a garden arbor. Clematis is a member of the Ranunculaceae or buttercup family. The genus clematis includes over 250 species and numerous garden hybrids.  Clematis comes in a wide variety flower form, color, bloom season, foliage effect and plant height. Out of the several hundred species of clematis vines available most are hardy deciduous flowering vines but a few are evergreen garden vines and require more temperate climate zones to flourish.

An extremely versatile garden vine, Clematis can be planted in a container or pot with the aid of a trellis, planted near a structure and allowed to act as a climbing vine, planted with other climbing plants such as climbing roses or trained over an arbor or trellis. Clematis varieties typically bloom at different times throughout the gardening season. To extend the bloom time of your clematis try planting several varieties with different bloom times together or adjacent to each other in the garden.

The delicate appearance of clematis has contributed to the notion that Clematis are difficult to grow, however, nothing could be further from the truth. To successfully grow clematis vines just remember that like most garden vines clematis like to have their 'heads' in the sun and their 'feet' in the shade. Amending your garden soil prior to planting with good organic matter will help your clematis to take root and grow happily for years to come. For best bloom color and to deter mildew and fungus problems, clematis require at least 6-8 hours of full sun. Clematis vines prefer moist, well drained soil and require fertilization during the growing season. Avoid high nitrogen fertilizer which can inhibit flower production and try a well balanced organic fertilizer instead.  Most clematis will require staking so the twining leaf petioles can cling and climb upward, over a garden trellis, fence, gate, arbor or intertwined with an old tree or climbing rose.
