Black BeautyTM Sambucus Origins:
This hardy, deer resistant Sambucus was developed by Ken Tobutt and Jacqui Prevette of the HRI - East Malling Station in England. Black Beauty Sambucus is a breakthrough plant with intriguing black foliage, extreme hardiness and soil adaptability. Not only does Black BeautyTM Elderberry make 'Guincho Purple' Sambucus out-dated, but it will completely change your perception of Sambucus. Unlike earlier selections of dark leafed Sambucus, the leaf color of Black Beauty does not fade to green in the heat of the summer, in fact it actually gets darker. We have been growing this wonderful garden shrub for our customers now for several years at our farm, Stargazer Perennials with great success! Our nursery is located in a USDA hardiness zone 5a and we have found Black Beauty Sambucus to be extremely hardy, very deer resistant and very adaptable to a variety of soil and light situations.

Black Beauty SambucusTM Garden Uses and Care:
Black Beauty Sambucus is useful for mass planting, in a garden or perennial borders or when incorporated into a Black Beauty Sambucus in potwoodland setting. This showy black leafed Elderberry is generally trouble-free from pests or diseases, making it a joy to add to any garden. Black BeautyTM Elderberry is very adaptable to soil and water situations. Once established,
Black BeautyTM Sambucus is very drought tolerant, but will also tolerate very wet soil conditions. This colorful and dramatic shrub can be grown several ways depending upon what you want to accomplish in your garden. If you have ample space to let Black BeautyTM Sambucus grow, you can simply shear it hard the first few years to promote branching, and then just let it go! In the perennial garden you can prune it back hard just after it finishes blooming to produce a smaller plant that is more appropriate for smaller gardens. You can also train Black BeautyTM Sambucus into a small patio tree by removing the lower branches and leaves and selecting one or three strong, straight trunks.

Pair Black Beauty Sambucus with Black LaceTM Sambucus and Sutherland Gold Sambucus for an eye-catching display of foliage texture and color in your garden.
