HAKONECHLOA 'AUREOLA' PERENNIAL PLANT OF THE YEAR 2009® NOW AVAILABLE AT STARGAZER PERENNIALS! Hakonechloa macra 'Aureola', also known as Golden Hakone Grass or Japanese Forest Grass, has been a long-time favorite of ours for its easy care and versatility in the landscape. A beautiful long-season grass whose flowing foliage can be used as a ground cover, a front-of-the-border edging plant, in mass plantings, around water features, in patio containers, and as a foliage contrast to Hostas and other shade plants. The golden foliage lights up a shade perennial border and provides a dramatic flowing texture to any perennial border. Easy to grow and love, Hakonechloa thrives in rich, moist well-drained humus soil: If you want this grass to be happy in your garden, spend some time improving your soil before planting! It can take a few years for your Hakone grass to fill in and give you the lush, mature fullness you see in garden photos, so try to purchase your Hakonechloa plants in large, mature pots. When planted en masse Golden Hakone grass waves like golden ocean waves in the slightest breeze and brightens every shady corner of the perennial border.
